The current expansion of the Hotel Steigenberger in Krems, which encompasses 32 rooms and indoor and outdoor renovations, is a good example of the high-quality, sustainable architecture for which GERNER GERNER PLUS. has stood for over 20 years.
The spectacular landscape of the vineyards surrounding the hotel was presented in the best possible fashion through the design. Every level in the building is wholly accessible, and environmental regulations, which are particularly strict in the area, were of course complied with. Examples are the use of geothermal energy, solid-wood windows and a wooden rainscreen. Obtaining a number of consultants’ expert opinions on landscape protection was necessary during the planning phase. Smooth progress and complying with the given time frame was made possible by conscientious cooperation among all the parties involved.
The hotel’s original structure was completed in two stages. The main body, constructed in 1990, extends approximately parallel to the inclining slope. In 2005 a second building was added, and it, too, runs along the terrain’s contours. Construction was apparently cut off in precipitously, forming a hard edge against the natural surroundings. The new building abuts this straight edge and develops the existing form along the lines of the slope, eventually intertwining with it.
Thirteen large planters were arranged next to the hotel’s balconies. The deciduous trees planted in them, which are several years old and grew together with the building and the natural surroundings over time, represent a central element of the design.
The uppermost floor of the new building houses a spacious wellness area with a rooftop terrace which provides a spectacular panoramic view of the vineyards and the Danube. A bridge connects this new area and the existing indoor pool. The ceiling between the pool and the added floor was dismantled, creating an atmospheric connection between the existing and new buildings.
These areas are now connected by a new staircase and an elevator, and all levels, even those which in the past could be reached by stairs only, are accessible. A glassed-in bridge leads from the new wellness floor to the outdoor pool and sauna, which are nestled in the existing woods.
“With the new building of the Steigenberger Hotel & Spa the architect’s office GERNER GERNER PLUS. created an architectural jewel that fits into the existing landscape perfectly. Our work with it has been extremely positive, constructive and highly professional. Many thanks to Andreas Gerner and his team!” – Daniel Hunger, manager of the Steigenberger Hotel & Spa
“The Steigenberger Hotel in Krems occupies such an outstanding location that we wanted to make the best possible use of it for the expansion to provide views from a number of different perspectives and design an oasis of comfort and relaxation with guests in mind.” – the architects, Andreas and Gerda Gerner
